Dood it's Dog Friendly

Dog Friendly Newport, RI

Newport, RI has always been one of my favorite places. I love the coastal town vibes mixed with old history. So when we got Charlie I knew we had to find all the dog friendly spots there! We normally just do day trips since Newport is about 1.5 hours away from Boston, but we spent the night this past November at Paws on Pelham, THE CUTEST dog friendly boutique inn I have ever seen. The decor and breakfast was to die for and it even had a “ruff” deck! We were amazed to find a dog friendly restaurant in the fall as most of the dog friendly restaurants in Newport are patio seating, but Sardella’s Italian Restaurant had a covered/heated patio we were more than welcome at. So many shops in downtown Newport are also dog-friendly so don’t be fearful of taking your dog with you while you see all the cute shops Newport has to offer. We truly love Newport so much and we hope you fall in love with it’s charm like we have. Here is a list of a few dog friendly hotels, restaurants, shops, and activities you can do next time you visit with your pup!

Hotels

  • Paws on Pelham: OF COURSE this is my highly recommended stay even though I haven’t stayed in the other hotels before. It has the cutest dog related decor. The inn keeper was the best and so helpful, she made the reservation for us at Sardella’s and she cooks a phenomenal breakfast in the AM for you. There is a roof deck and homemade treats in the lobby. It just felt like home and I never wanted to leave TBH.
  • Gurney’s Newport: Located right on the ocean. It is a little pricier but if you’re in to luxury this is the spot for you. There is an additional charge for dogs to stay.
  • Hotel Viking: This hotel is historically beautiful with a roof deck. They have 2 dog friendly dining options. They also can set up dog day care services if you wanted to check out places that didn’t allow dogs, such as the Mansions or Castle Hill Inn lawn (my personal fave). They also charge an additional rate for dogs to stay.
  • Mill Street Inn: This inn is a more modern type of inn with suites. It is walking distance to downtown.
  • The Inn on Bellevue: An inn with old charm. This is more your standard type of inn. Walking distance to downtown.
  • The Vanderbilt: A boutique hotel with a roof deck

  • The Landing: Seafood restaurant primarily. Very dog friendly patio with water bowls. Located downtown. Only dog friendly for lunch during COVID.
  • Diego’s: Mexican restaurant with a dog friendly patio. Water bowls provided. Located downtown.
  • O’Brien’s Pub: An Irish American restaurant located on Thames Street. They are very dog friendly that they even have their own doggie menu and water bowls on patio. Currently not dog friendly due to COVID.
  • The Deck: Seafood restaurant with a dog friendly patio
  • The Grill at 41 North: Seafood and American food restaurant. It is on the pricier side, but very dog friendly deck with water bowls provided.
  • The Black Pearl: Another seafood and American restaurant. The main restaurant does not allow dogs but they have a very large patio area that does. Currently not dog friendly due to COVID.
  • Sardella’s: Italian restaurant that has pretty much year round covered and uncovered patio seating for dogs.
  • Bar’Cino: Italian restaurant with outdoor seating for you and your dog. Delicious food and great drinks.
  • Midtown Oyster Bar: American restaurant with great oyster selection, seafood, and all around delicious food of all types. They have a second floor outdoor patio we sat at with Charlie that was lovely!
  • Drift Cafe: Trendy cafe right on Thames St. All-day breakfast with lunch as well. Delicious coffee.
  • Stoneacre Brasserie: French inspired menu right in downtown Newport.
  • The Reef: Waterfront dining dockside in downtown. International variety of food with fun cocktails.
  • Smoke House: BBQ restaurant with great cocktails downtown.

Activities

  • Cliff Walk: A scenic 3.5 mile path with breathtaking views of the ocean and the Newport Mansions
  • Gansett Cruises: Boat tours and sunset cruises that allow your furry friends to join on leash.
  • Fort Adams: A large state park with many walking trails, beautiful views, and a visitor center
  • Newport Polo: Catch a polo game! Such a fun, unique, and cheap activity that would be great with friends. You can post up shop next to your car or find a spot closer to the field to watch. You can bring your own food and alcohol here.
  • Newport Winery: My personal fave. They have beer and cider in addition to wine for those that are not wineos. Dogs are allowed on leash on the patio. I recommend trying the “Great White” wine. They however are no longer dog friendly due to COVID. You also need a reservation in advance to go, but definitely worth stopping in to grab a bottle or two.
  • Newport Craft: Brewing and Distilling Co. In Newport. Large outdoor pavilion with lawn games. Dogs also allowed inside. Besides beer they have delicious cocktails so great option for those who aren’t the biggest beer drinkers. They have a lot of events held here as well. Food trucks and live music.
